How May a Child Be Adopted In Ontario?

Ontario provincial law governs adoption. Different rules apply in other provinces. There are four ways a child may be adopted in Ontario:

  1. by a family member or step-parent;
  2. through a Children's Aid Society;
  3. through a licensed adoption agency; or
  4. through a recognized licensed international adoption agency with offices in Ontario.

Because of the law's noble intent to protecting the best interests of the child, the adoption process can become legally very complex due to the end result being the total and permanent legal severance of the child from his or her birth parents and reattachment to new parents. A court hearing may be necessary to demonstrate an evidentiary basis for the various requirements of adoption having been complied with.
